Which Day Should I Retire?
Does the *Day* of Retirement Matter?
You generally know which month and year you want to retire, but does the individual day make a difference? The answer is yes! This is extremely important because this date determines when your annuity payment begins.
Retirees are placed on the annuity roll on the first day of the month after they retire. This means your pension will start the first day of the next month. For example, if you retire on the first of the month, you will not get an annuity payment for an entire month. The only exception to this is for CSRS retirees. Their annuities can begin the following day only if they retire on the first three days of the month.
But don’t forget – your ideal retirement date also depends on your service computation date. A personalized Federal Benefit Analysis can help you determine when is the best time to retire based on your situation.
